Ian Hansen – Brilliant Marine Artist

One of the best parts about being the President of the Oatley 101 Society of Artists is that you get to meet some incredible artists.

On Saturday 9th September, Ian Hansen demonstrated his oil painting skills for our members and visitors.  Without any reference material Ian painted a sailing ship on a stormy sea. It was, to say the very least, amazing.

His knowledge of subject matter, his diverse experience in all things marine and his wonderful stories were spellbinding. It is not difficult to appreciate why his extraordinary artworks are in such high demand.  Self-taught, Ian has been painting since the age of 8, winning his first award at the age of 11 (I am quite sure he was born with art in his soul).  His incredible talent, absolute love of the art and his commitment to it, was so clear to all attending on the day.

Ian shared his “sketch books” from his Antarctic experience.  INCREDIBLE!

The portfolio of his artworks was magnificent.

We learned about masts – from foremast to Royal mast; sails – from topsail (lower and upper) to moonraker; various types of rigging as well as the bowsprit and figurehead.

Ian was so generous with his knowledge and skills throughout the demonstration.

A biography about Ian would be on the best-selling list as soon as it went to print.
