Five Years as President of Oatley 101 Society of Artists.

Yesterday at the AGM I gave my fifth and final report on the Oatley 101 Society of Artists as the President.
It has been a wonderful experience on many levels. I have learned much about people, art, community and all associated with an organisation such as this one.
Upon reflection I put in an incredible amount of time, energy and self, and worked with a brilliant committee who did the same.
What we achieved was amazing. Membership grew in that time from 90 to 235 at last count. I implemented many changes and brought in to the mix, an art exhibition which changed everything for the art society forever. Ardency, previously Waterbrook, has been a big focus, becoming Nationally recognised as an exhibition of quality. The results from that success have encouraged sponsorship of the Members’ exhibition.
We have, over the 5 years contributed to many community charities to the value of $20 000 to support art related charities. Donations of artworks to “Response for Life” have ensured 7 defibrillators were purchased for schools and local sporting groups.
The programs put in place for the members have been so very well received and supported. We have upgraded much of the equipment for the society and presented many successful exhibitions.
Screen lighting was an issue so I researched lighting. This proved to be unsuccessful and I pulled together a team from the membership to design and build a State of the Art lighting system which brilliantly showcases the high quality art on display. The society now has its own electrical sub-committee which manages the maintenance and upgrades.

Over the five years we have changed expectations and standards from okay to very high quality and it is paying off in increased sales of art and growing membership.
With acknowledgement in Parliament, and noted in Hansard, by David Coleman, Federal Member for Banks, we have certainly made a mark.

I have to add that for me, I have learned all about the art Community and how it operates. I have met the most extraordinary people and high profile artists and personally, gained much as a result. I have also realised that I am good at selling art. It is not about forcing it down throats but rather transitioning the art lover to the art buyer.

I leave this role with no regrets, knowing that everything is in place for those stepping up to take the society to greater heights. I will remain a member as I believe it to be one of the best art societies in Sydney. Very proactive, very welcoming and a lot of fun.
As my own art seems to be gaining momentum I am looking forward to more time to paint a masterpiece or two. However, I am sure I will get involved in something else as that is who I am.
